UVA WISE PICKS UP WIN IN FIRST DAY OF NGU TOURNAMENT

The UVA Wise volleyball team picked up their first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 10 against Johnson C. Smith University in Tigerville, S.C. The Cavaliers came out victorious with a score of 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-10, 25-23).

Although the win wasn't a sweep, The Cavaliers were able to silence the Golden Bulls when it mattered, with key blocks provided by sophomore Cassidy Farley and kills by Kelsey Green and Morgan Blevins in the first set to score the last five points in the win.

In the second set, Johnson C. Smith came out stronger and fought UVA Wise head-to-head until the final two kills by The Golden Bulls' Brianne Davis secured the win, 26-24.

In the third set, UVA Wise seemed to capitalize on Johnson C. Smith's many attack errors and didn't allow the Golden Bulls to score past ten points, giving UVA Wise the win 25-10.

In the forced fourth set, the Golden Bulls and the Cavaliers played point for point, until the Bulls were able to get to a score of 23 after an attack error by UVA Wise's Green while the Cavaliers were kept at 20. The game seemed to be in favor of the Golden Bulls, but The Cavaliers decided to put the game in their own hands and after back-to-back kills by Blevins, attack errors by Johnson C. Smith, and blocks by Green and Farley — UVA Wise had snagged the win, 25-23.

Leaders in the match included Adison Minor with 13 kills, Matelyn Gibson with 20 digs, and Farley with four blocks. Leaders on Johnson C. Smith included Davis with eight kills and Jeneene Lewis with 17 digs.

The Cavaliers will go on to day 2 of the NGU tournament tomorrow with matches against Fayetteville State and Southern Wesleyan.
