NEWBERRY, S.C. - - Junior Katie Allen netted a career-high six goals as UVA Wise rolled to a 20-13 South Atlantic Conference lacrosse victory over Newberry at Seltzer Field Wednesday. Allen led a quartet of Cavaliers who registered a hat trick in the win as Jesse French (4), Sydney Trask (3) and Kaila Lacey (3) also had big scoring days for Meghan Dennehy's squad.
Newberry (4-6, 4-5 SAC) started the game with three quick goals behind a goal each from Kelly Martyn, Taylor Dorion and Sophie Moore.
UVA Wise (4-4, 4-2 SAC) responded with four consecutive goals to take its first lead of the afternoon. During the spurt, Mallory Trimble, Allen, Lacey and Trask all scored to start what was a big day for the Cavalier offense.
The Wolves responded with a 3-0 scoring run of their own only to see the visitors once again counter with an extended scoring splurge.
Lacey scored to cut the lead to 7-5 before a woman-up goal by Trask had UVA Wise within a goal. Back-to-back goals from French put the Cavs in front for good as the guests scored 12 consecutive goals to go in front 16-7 with just over 15 minutes to play.
The run effectively put the game out of reach and while the offense was finding the back of the net, the defense was on point as well. UVA Wise forced 24 Newberry turnovers and limited the Wolves to a 14-for-20 showing in clear attempts.
Trimble, Kameryn Darrington Abby Willis and Erin Smith spearheaded the defensive effort.
In addition to scoring twice, Trimble registered four caused turnovers, Darrington scooped up four groundballs, Willis had three caused turnovers and two groundballs and Smith had three caused turnovers with a pair of groundballs.
Moore and Chole Wood led Newberry with four goals each but the team would be unable to overcome the 12-0 scoring run as the Wolves dropped their fourth consecutive contest.
For UVA Wise it was a win to start the longest road trip of the season. The Cavs will play their second of three straight away from Smith Stadium Saturday when the team visits No. 6 Queens University of Charlotte Saturday. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
