French Sets Assist Record, Cavs Fall to No. 13 Saints

WISE - - On a day when UVA Wise senior Jesse French became the program's all-time assist leader, No. 13 Limestone overcame a first half two-goal deficit to claim a 16-10 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory at Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon.

UVA Wise (3-4, 3-2 SAC) got off to a fast start as French assisted on a pair of early goals to tie the program's all-time assist record with her 110th assist as Meghan Dennehy's squad took a 2-1 lead with 21:10 to play in the first half.

Katie Allen scored an unassisted goal to push the UVA Wise advantage to 3-1 before Limestone (8-0, 7-0 SAC) mounted its comeback.

The Saints scored the final five goals of the first half thanks to a trio of goals from Britannie Ouimet.

Limestone would push the lead to 7-3 on a woman up goal from Lauren Chong with 29 minutes remaining in the game.

Minutes later, French would enter the record book as she assisted on an Ellie Earnshaw goal to get the deficit to three. It was the first of back-to-back goals for UVA Wise as Katie Allen scored one of her team-high four goals to make it a two-goal affair.

It would be as close as the Cavs could get as the Saints scored the next three goals to run the lead to 10-5 with under 20 minutes to play.

Limestone finished the game with a 39-to-12 advantage in shots while holding a 20-7 lead in draw controls.

UVA Wise goalie Jordan Edwards registered 16 saves while defender Erin Smith tallied seven groundballs to surpass 100 for her career. She now has 104 groundballs to rank sixth in school history.

French finished the game with five assists en route to a team-high six points.

Ouimet led all players with five goals.

Next up, the Cavs travel to Newberry to face the Wolves Wednesday. First draw is set for 2 p.m.
