WISE - - Sydney Trask's free position goal with 27 seconds to play in overtime allowed No. 4 seed UVA Wise to survive a scare from No. 5 seed Lenoir-Rhyne in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament as the Cavaliers posted a 12-11 victory over the Bears at Smith Stadium Tuesday.
Trask's goal completed a comeback for UVA Wise (8-5) who trailed Lenoir-Rhyne (5-7) 11-8 with under six minutes to play.
Jesse French cut the Bears lead to two when she scored with 5:30 to play. The senior made it a one goal game with 99 seconds to play when she scored her second goal of the contest.
Fourteen seconds later, the game was tied. After Mallory Trimble picked up the draw control, Katie Allen scored an unassisted goal to tie the game.
Lenoir-Rhyne would win the next draw control, but would be unable to get a game-winning shot attempt off as Ellie Earnshaw forced a turnover and scooped up the groundball.
The Cavaliers would get one final shot off in regulation from Allen, but Teanna Sieben would register one of her 15 saves to send the game to overtime.
UVA Wise would win the draw in overtime, but once again Sieben would register a save. A similar story to the end of regulation would play out as the Bears would turn it over without getting off a shot.
This time, Kameryn Darrington would force the turnover and scoop up the groundball with just over a minute to play in the extra session.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Isabelle Dunnam would be assessed a yellow card, her second of the game, setting up the game-winning free position shot.
With the win, the Cavs have won five consecutive postseason contests, dating back to the 2018 season.
UVA Wise trailed for the entirety of the second half. The Bears' Suzy Smith had a career-night with seven goals, including four in the second half. Smith tallied a woman down goal with 20:39 to play to put Lenoir-Rhyne up 8-6.
Defense was pivotal to the Cavs comeback. UVA Wise forced 29 Lenoir-Rhyne turnovers and limited the guests to a 19-for-31 showing in clear attempts.
Darrington posted a career-high six groundballs while Trimble added five groundballs and Erin Smith picked up four.
Senior Ashley Wells did her best to extend her career, the attacker posted a team-high four goals for the Cavs. Allen also had a hat trick with three goals in the victory.
The win sends UVA Wise to Hickory, N.C. where the team will face regular season champion and top seeded Queens University of Charlotte in the semifinals. The Royals received an opening round bye by virtue of being regular season champions.
