Cavs Drop Baseball Doubleheader to Lions

WISE - - Visiting Mars Hill lined a combined 12 homers en route to a doubleheader baseball sweep of UVA Wise at Stallard Field Saturday afternoon. The Lions took game one 15-1 in five innings before holding off the Cavaliers 10-9 in the night cap.

Mars Hill (16-20, 11-17 SAC) entered the weekend needing to win at least 3-of-4 games in the weekend series to have hopes of playing postseason baseball next week.

UVA Wise (4-27, 3-25 SAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Gabe Wurtz belted a solo homer to right centerfield in the home first.

It was about the only bright spot for the Cavs in the opener as the Lions' Zach Weaver homered to tie the game in the second before Austin Tredway's run-scoring double later in the inning put the guests up for good.

An inning later, Ruben Trillio and Tyler Lala hit a solo homer each to run the lead to 4-1.

A nine-run fourth inning made the score 13-1 before Hunter Holland's two-run blast provided the winning margin of 15-1.

Wurtz helped keep his team in the game in game two as the senior clobbered a pair of homers over the first three innings, the second a three-run blast to put UVA Wise in front 4-2.

A Trevor Bailey RBI single would cut the deficit to 4-3 only to see JoJo Kelliher's RBI groundout push the lead back to two at 5-3 after four innings of play.

Mars Hill tied the game on a two-run blast from Lala in the fifth inning before extending the lead to two on a two-run homer off the bat of Weaver in the seventh.

A bases clearing double by Lala plated three in the eighth to seemingly put the game out of reach at 10-5 going to the ninth inning.

In the ninth, Tyler Blaum was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Wurtz walked to put two on with nobody out. Cole Harness then hammered a three-run homer to centerfield to cut the lead to 10-8.

After a strikeout, Hunter Meador reached base on an infield single. Following the second out of the frame, Tyler Campbell walked and Kelliher loaded the bases with an infield single.

A passed ball would make the score 10-9, but Connor Presnell would record a strikeout to end the contest.

Wurtz finished game two 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored and a walk while Gavin Birkhimer was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The same two teams will be back at it tomorrow for the regular season finale. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Stallard Field.
