WISE – Women's tennis fell 7-0 in its conference and home opener Monday afternoon to the Wolves of Newberry College.
In doubles, UVA Wise (2-4, 0-1 SAC) juniors Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko were defeated 6-2 at No. 1 while junior Grace Hall and freshman Sarah Moore were topped 6-1 by the Wolves (7-2, 2-1 SAC) Amy Griffiths and Lucy Spice. Newberry's Rebecca Gibbons and Rosie Harfield won by default at No. 3 doubles to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Liza Akimenko fought but fell at the number one singles spot as she was outlasted by Judit Gonzalez, 7-5, 6-4. Katya Akimenko and Moore were the only other two Cavaliers to win a point in their match as Katya fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 while Moore was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Hall and junior Lillian Morris were both swept at the number three and number four spot, respectively. Newberry gained another default win at No. 6 singles to take the match 7-0.
Head coach Danny Rowland's squad will return to action on the road for another SAC matchup at Catawba College Saturday afternoon. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in Salisbury, North Carolina.
