WISE – Men's tennis was defeated 6-1 Monday afternoon in the Cavaliers home and conference opener against Newberry College. Sophomore John Robert Kilgore picked up UVA Wise's (1-3, 0-1 SAC) sole win of the day in a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles.
In doubles, sophomore Jake Ferner and junior Dominic Hoffman paired up at No. 1 as the two were defeated 6-2. At number two, senior Coleton Burke and junior Luke Jarnagin were outlasted by the Wolves' (1-5, 1-2 SAC) Stratas Anastopoulo and Luke Layton, 6-3, while Kilgore and fellow sophomore Dylan Galenski were swept by Newberry's Enzo Blavignat and Adam Black at number three doubles.
Ferner dropped a tough battle at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to Newberry's Blavignant while Hoffman and Burke both fell 6-1, 6-0 to their opponents at the number two and number three spot, respectively. The Wolves' Anastopoulo gained a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jarnagin at number four as Galenski was topped in his match at number six, 8-3, by Layton.
Head coach Roger Whited's team is back in action this weekend at Catawba College. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
