GAFFNEY, S.C. - - Host Limestone used solid pitching in game one and timely hitting in game two to claim a South Atlantic Conference baseball sweep over UVA Wise Saturday afternoon.
Limestone (9-10, 7-7 SAC) used a complete game three-hitter from Jordan Adcox to win the opener 6-1. Adcox fanned nine batters while allowing a single earned run in a 115-pitch effort.
UVA Wise (1-15, 0-14 SAC) scored its lone run of the game on a wild pitch. Jude Drzemiecki, Bret Roberts and Ethan Fletcher had a hit each for the Cavaliers.
Saints' designated hitter Matt Hilderbrandt belted a grand slam in the third inning and the run support was more than enough for Adcox who struck out all nine of his hitters in the first five innings.
Game two saw Limestone outslug UVA Wise 9-7. Gabe Wurtz homered for the visitors to give Hank Banner's squad a 1-0 lead in the top of the second only to see Hilderbrandt belt a solo homer as part of a three-run inning for Limestone who took a 3-1 lead.
The Saints would eventually build a 6-2 advantage after five innings before the Cavs mounted a comeback.
Clay Taylor lined a two-run single before Fletcher laced a two-run double to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh.
Limestone would respond with an RBI double by Dylan Shugan and a RBI base hit by Devon Cantey to go back in front 8-6.
The Saints would tack on an insurance run in the eighth when Ben Huber singled home Conner Sibbald to take a three-run lead to the ninth.
UVA Wise did not go down without a fight as freshman Cole Harness homered to dead centerfield and Wurtz singled to get the tying run to the plate. It would be as close as the Cavs could get as Cole Wagner shut the door to record his second save of the season.
Fletcher went 4-for-5 in game two to lead a 12-hit attack for UVA Wise.
The series is set to conclude tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
