UVA Wise Falls to Wingate

WISE - - UVA Wise suffered through one of its worst offensive performances of the season Saturday as Wingate claimed a 75-53 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory at the Prior Center.

UVA Wise (12-4, 11-4 SAC) failed to score over the final five minutes of the first quarter as Wingate (10-8, 10-7 SAC) built a 21-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The Bulldogs lead swelled to 16 at intermission as Bryanna Troutman scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the opening half.

Jamie Cluesman's team mounted a furious rally in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Senior Hanna Oliver drilled a 3-pointer to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 40-37 to cap a 15-to-2 scoring spurt by the Cavaliers.

The run was answered by a 16-to-5 run by Wingate that effectively put the game out of reach.

Troutman finished the game with 15 points and a game-high 20 rebounds. She was one of four Bulldogs to finish in double figures as Haleigh Hatfield (18), Jaia Wilson (14) and Destiny Coleman (14) led the offense for the guests.

UVA Wise made just 3-of-28 attempts from beyond the arc in the game while shooting 33.8 percent from the floor.

Nia Vanzant led all players with 20 points while Kalee Johnson chipped in 11 with Oliver and Caitlyn Ross scoring 10 points each.

The win by Wingate evens the season-series between the two schools. UVA Wise won the first meeting 92-82.

Next up, Cluesman's crew visits Mars Hill Monday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. and the action can be heard live on FM 92.5 or wlsdradio.com
