Baseball Drops Season Opener at LMU

HARROGATE, Tenn. - - Lincoln Memorial University lined 14 hits and used a four-run third inning to claim a 10-2 non-conference victory visiting UVA Wise at Hennon Field Wednesday afternoon. A trio of Railsplitters had multiple hits in the win, including Brandon Parrott who led all players with three hits.

The game was the first for UVA Wise (0-1) in 343 days due to COVID-19 and it marked the first time the team had been on a baseball field in 2021 due to inclement weather.

LMU (1-1) took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. A two-out, run-scoring single by Andrew Keene plated Brent Richey for Justin Haywood's club who earned the first win of his head coaching career.

The Railsplitters took a 5-0 lead thanks to a four-run frame in the third. Keene had a two-run double in the inning, the other two runs would score on a pair of Cavalier errors.

UVA Wise would score its first runs of the season in the fifth inning. A bases loaded walk by Gabe Wurtz allowed Gavin Birkheimer to score his first run in a Cavalier uniform before a second run scored on a passed ball.

A trio of Railsplitter runs in the sixth inning put the game out of reach. A sacrifice fly by Scooter Ray preceded run-scoring hits by Richey and Parrott.

Leading 8-2, LMU tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning as Tyler Boyd and Ray had RBI singles in the inning.

Cavalier hitters were held to five hits on the day. Tyler Campbell and Tyler Horvath each had a double in the season opener.

On the mound, UVA Wise hurler Justin Reed made his collegiate debut and tossed a scoreless inning without allowing a runner to reach base safely.

Brennan Murphy earned the win for LMU, the freshman right-hander tossed a scoreless frame with a strikeout to earn his first collegiate victory.

Next up, the Cavs begin South Atlantic Conference play at Tusculum next weekend. The four-game series is set to begin Feb. 27.
