Cavalier Men Fall to Carson-Newman

WISE – Men's basketball dropped a home game against Carson-Newman Wednesday night inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center, 97-70.

The Eagles (9-5, 8-5 SAC) opened the game with an 8-2 run with 16:12 to play in the first half. Carson-Newman stayed hot, draining a trio of long-distance shots to take a double-digit advantage, 20-10, with 13:15 on the clock.

UVA Wise (3-12, 3-12 SAC) was unable to score for nearly three minutes as the Eagles pushed the margin to 20 points at the 11-minute mark.

Carson-Newman stayed in front of UVA Wise for the remainder of the half as the Cavs trailed 57-32 at the break.

Freshman Isaiah McAmis posted eight first half points off the bench for the Cavs while redshirt junior Briggs Parris scored six points on a pair of three-pointers. Junior Kaeleb Carter finished the half with five of his career-high seven assists.

The Eagles had two players in double-figures at the half while shooting 63.9 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from behind the arc. UVA Wise shot 40 percent from both the field and downtown while going 6-for-7 at the line in the opening half.

Less than three minutes into the second half, a dunk by the Eagles' Bryant Thomas extended Carson-Newman's lead as UVA Wise trailed 64-34 at the 17:30 mark.

Sophomore Izeah Parker's jumper with 13:17 to play began a quick 8-0 run for the Cavs as Carter and freshman Bradley Dean connected on back-to-back three's with UVA Wise down 77-47.

UVA Wise continued to claw at the lead as Carson-Newman held an 89-65 advantage with 5:35 to play, but the Eagles held off the Cavs in a 97-70 decision.

The Cavs were aided by 12 bench points in the second half and posted 10 points in the paint. UVA Wise shot 45.2 percent from the floor in the frame as Parker netted 10 points and added four assists.

UVA Wise shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent (11-for-16) at the stripe in the loss. Parker ended the night with a team-high 12 points on a career-high six field goals. Carter boasted a career-high seven assists and tallied nine points. McAmis tied his season-high in three-pointers, draining three from behind the arc as he also registered a season-high 11 points for the second time this campaign.

Carson-Newman shot 62.9 percent from the floor and 43.3 percent from three on the night. Ren Dyer led the Eagles with 21 points on seven three's and a game-high eight boards. Bryant Thomas had a perfect night from the field as he went 10-for-10 in a 20-point performance and added six rebounds.

Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will be back in action this weekend on the road as the Cavs travel to No.16/12 Queens (NC). Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
