UVA Wise Drops Road Test at No. 20 Queens (NC)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cavalier men dropped their road test at No. 25/20 Queens University of Charlotte Saturday afternoon, 108-88, inside Curry Arena.

Five Cavaliers (3-13, 3-13 SAC) reached double-digit points led by junior Kaeleb Carter's 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Carter added five rebounds and tallied a team-high six assists and four steals to his stat line.

Redshirt junior Briggs Parris followed Carter with 18 points while fellow junior Cameron Whiteside posted 17 points in the loss. Sophomore Izeah Parker netted 11 points including a pair of three-point baskets while freshman Bradly Dean posted 12 points on a season-high four made three-pointers, going a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown.

UVA Wise opened the scoring with back-to-back three's by Parris and Whiteside to take a 6-0 lead over Queens (12-4, 11-3 SAC) a little over a minute into the contest. The Royals responded with a 10-0 run over the course over the course of two minutes to go in front of the Cavs.

The two teams relied heavily on outside shooting throughout the game as another three-pointer for the Cavs by freshman Isaiah McAmis cut Queens advantage to seven points, 24-17, around midway through the half.

The Royals continued to extend the margin with a 62-43 advantage heading into the half.

UVA Wise connected on 10 three-point shots in the first frame, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc and from the floor. Carter led the Cavs with 17 first half points.

A Whiteside three ended a nearly two minute scoring drought to start the second half for UVA Wise with Queens still in front, 64-46. After trailing by as many as 24 points, Parker and Parris combined for an 8-0 Cavalier spurt to close the gap, down 70-54 at the 15:25 mark.

Two more triples by Dean and Parris cut the Royals advantage to 14 points, 79-65, with a little under 11 minutes to play. The Cavs continued to claw back as Dean knocked down back-to-back threes as the Cavs trailed with just under two minutes on the clock, but it would not be enough as UVA Wise dropped its road test.

On the night, UVA Wise was aided by 21 points from the bench while the Cavs were outscored in the paint 38-20. UVA Wise shot 49.2 percent (29-for-59) from the field, 48.7 percent (19-for-39), from three, and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the stripe.

Head coach Blake Mellinger's team will be back on the road next week for Wednesday's game at Lenoir-Rhyne. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. in Hickory, North Carolina.
