Cavs Throttle Royals, Push Winning Streak to Nine

WISE - - UVA Wise has now won nine consecutive games following Monday's 93-53 thrashing of visiting Queens University of Charlotte. Kalee Johnson led all scorers with 23 points while Peyton Sams came off the bench to hand out a season-high nine assists while finishing with a season-best five steals to lead the Cavaliers to their largest victory ever over a South Atlantic Conference opponent.

UVA Wise (9-1, 9-1 SAC) learned moments before the game they were receiving votes in the most recent D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll and the news seemed to provide a spark as the Cavs forced seven turnovers in the first quarter while making 47.1 percent of their shot attempts en route to a 22-12 lead.

Queens (1-8, 1-7 SAC) never recovered from the slow start. The Royals would commit 27 turnovers in the contest which led to 32 points for the Cavs.

UVA Wise would build its lead to as many as 43 points with 2:36 to play in the contest as every Cav on the active roster appeared and scored in the win. Hanna Oliver and Caitlyn Ross each canned a pair of 3-pointers as the team made seven triples in the game. Ross netted 12 points while Oliver added eight points, Nia Vanzant was 5-of-8 from the floor as she scored in double figures for the ninth consecutive game.

Leah Kestner scored a season-high seven points off the bench while Aanyah Lambert and Erin Egerbrecht each scored their first collegiate points. Lambert finished with four points while Egerbrecht tallied five as part of a Cavalier bench that posted 36 points.

Jamie Cluesman's team finished the game shooting 55.2 percent from the floor while dominating the interior by winning the battle of the boards 44-to-24.

Johnson posted a team-high 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Six of her rebounds came on the offensive end as UVA Wise finished with 17 offensive rebounds which led to 22 second chance points.

Kalaya Hill finished with 16 points, Christian Deng added 15 and Amari Davis chipped in 12 in the loss.

The game was the first of three scheduled this week for the Cavs. Next up, Bluefield State visits the Prior Center Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip. Cluesman's crew wraps up the week with a trip to Anderson Saturday.
