WISE - - Senior Hanna Oliver finished 7-of-10 from the field, including a 6-of-9 showing from the 3-point line en route to a game-high 21 points as UVA Wise claimed its 10th consecutive victory, 86-62 over Bluefield State College at the Prior Center Wednesday. The Cavaliers used a 34-point third quarter to break open a seven-point game at intermission to secure the program record 10th straight win.
UVA Wise (10-1) started the game slow, turning it over 14 times and surrendering 10 offensive rebounds to Bluefield State (2-7) in the first half.
Despite the slow start, the Cavs were able to get the lead and stay in front behind the play of a trio of seniors Oliver, Kalee Johnson and Ada Stanley. Oliver made a trio of long-range shots in the first half while Stanley was 4-of-5 from the field and Johnson scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Leading 38-31 at intermission, Cluesman's team put the game out of reach with the 34-point third quarter. UVA Wise opened the period with a 9-0 scoring spurt that put the game out of reach. Caitlyn Ross and Johnson were key in the run as the duo combined to score all nine points. Ross finished the quarter with 12 of her 14 points in the contest.
The Cavs ability to get out on the break proved crucial as the hosts scored 32 fast break points compared to eight for the visitors. UVA Wise also was efficient at getting to the line and converting the opportunities as the club finished 19-of-24 from the charity stripe.
For the second consecutive game, UVA Wise placed at least 11 players in the scoring column. Johnson picked up her sixth double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Stanley finished the game 6-of-8 from the field to net 12 points.
As a team, the Cavs shot 50 percent or better for the third straight game; UVA Wise finished the game 30-of-60 from the field.
The Cavs tallied eight blocks with Johnson, Ross and Meg Crawford each picking up two each with Stanley and Aanyah Lambert each registering one.
Bluefield State was led by Londen Coleman's 14 points off the bench while Katrina Davis added 12 as the only Blues to finish in double figure scoring.
The visitors forced 26 turnovers but were plagued by poor shooting. Bluefield State finished the game shooting just 28.8 percent from the floor, including an 8-for-30 showing from distance.
