ROCK HILL, S.C. - - A quartet of UVA Wise football players earned postseason honors from the South Atlantic Conference when the league announced its annual awards Thursday.
Defensive lineman Chavon Fields, wide receiver Devin Heckstall and defensive back Markel Dailey earned First-Team All-SAC while running back Jaevon Gillespie was a Second-Team All-SAC pick.
Fields, a 6-foot-1, 250-pounder from Richmond, Va. led the Cavaliers with 12.5 tackles for loss this fall. The defensive lineman also led UVA Wise with six sacks, three of which came in the team's 30-7 triumph over Catawba College. Following that performance, the defensive lineman earned SAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Fields' tackles for loss number ranked third in the conference with sack total ranking sixth.
Heckstall, a 6-foot-6 transfer from Utah State made the most of his lone season at UVA Wise. The Baltimore native led the team and ranked fourth in the league with 751 receiving yards. Heckstall's six receiving touchdowns were also a team-high and ranked sixth in the conference. The receiver hauled in a season-best ten catches against NCAAA FCS member East Tennessee State University. That night, Heckstall also grabbed a pair of touchdowns against the nationally ranked Buccaneers.
Dailey made an immediate impact in his inaugural season in a Cavalier uniform. The Birmingham, Ala. product picked off five passes in a three-game stretch this fall that included a pair of two-interception games against Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne, both of which were UVA Wise victories. The defensive back finished the season with 50 tackles, five interceptions and three pass deflections in his redshirt freshman campaign. Dailey ended the season ranked 15th in NCAA Division II and second in the SAC in interceptions while also picking up a SAC Defensive Player of the Week award during the year.
Gillespie served as the team's primary running back this fall and the Greeneville, Tenn. native made the most of his opportunity. Gillespie rushed for a career-high nine touchdowns, the second most in the league, while averaging 5.2 yards per carry. The back gained a career-high 167 yards while scoring a career-best four rushing touchdowns in his squad's victory over Carson-Newman. Gillespie earned SAC Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against the Eagles.
UVA Wise finished the season with five wins, a three-win improvement from the program's total in its first SAC season in 2019.
