VOLLEYBALL SENIOR NIGHT SUFFERS 3-1 LOSS IN SEASON FINALE

The UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers ended their regular season in a tough loss tonight, falling to the Carson-Newman Eagles 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14).

The Cavaliers (4-22, 0-18 SAC) had a newfound drive to them after honoring their seniors on senior night, grabbing a 3-2 early lead against the Eagles in the first set. Senior Kelsey Green came out swinging early, producing a kill to aid the Cavs in the lead. Carson-Newman struck back with a kill by Blake Cherry to tie it up at three, but Cassidy Farley of the Cavs swiped the lead right back with a hefty kill. Eagle Erin Edwards responded quickly with a kill of her own, and started an eight-point rally to run away from the Cavs and solidify a win. The Eagles took the first set 25-16.

In the second set, the Cavs and the Eagles became more competitive with each other and exchanged point-by-point for the majority of the match. With the Eagles up by one point at 16, Cavaliers Kaylee Scarce and Adison Minor of came up big to tie the set up once again. Nevertheless, Carson-Newman responded with an eight-point rally and never let the Cavs score again within the set. Carson-Newman was able to snag the second-set W by a score of 25-17.

In the third set, the Eagles looked like they were going to take early control of the set once again, as they took a 13-7 lead. But the energy soon shifted for the Cavs and they went on a four-point run consisting of an Eagles error, two killer blocks by Farley and Minor, and a Green kill. Although Carson-Newman grabbed two quick points right back, UVA Wise once again produced a 4-point run led by Green to tie the score 15-15. A nervous Eagles squad was able to produce two kills to attempt to squash another run by the Cavs, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The Cavs came rolling in with five consecutive points to give them a 21-18 lead. The Eagles produced a few kills, but the trio of Green, Dannah Persinger, and Scarce got the job done and aided the Cavs in a 25-23 win.

In the fourth set, each team exchanged points evenly until the Eagles scored their 10th point of the match. The Carson-Newman squad was hungry for revenge as they produced a silencing seven-point rally to give them a 16-11 lead. The rallies kept on coming for the Eagles as they led another five-point run and three-point run to close the match out.

Minor ended the night with 13 kills, while senior teammate Green finished her last match as a Cav with five aces and three blocks. Senior Matelyn Gibson ended her last match as a Cav on the leaderboard with one ace, 11 digs, and four assists.
Edwards of the Eagles led the night in kills overall with 17, and teammate Abigail Hildenbrand ended the night with an impressive 27 assists.

The Cavaliers end their regular season with a 4-22 record, going 0-18 in the South Atlantic Conference.
