WISE - - Jordan Terrell rushed for 296 yards on 44 carries as visiting Barton College claimed a 36-24 win over UVA Wise in the season finale for both schools at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. The win by the Bulldogs allowed the program to finish at 6-5, securing the first winning season in program history.
Terrell entered the game second in the nation in rushing and it was obvious early the redshirt freshman was going to do all he could to finish the regular season as the nation's top rusher. The back tallied 41 rushing yards on his first six carries, including a touchdown to aid Barton (6-5) to early and 7-0 lead.
UVA Wise (5-6) tied the game with 11:18 to play in the opening quarter when Lendon Redwine found Dorian Goddard on a 34-yard touchdown connection.
It would be as close as the Cavaliers would get as the Bulldogs would score the next 20 points to go in front 27-7.
Barton's quarterback Jaquan Lynch fired two touchdown passes during the 20-point scoring spurt while Jackson Brooks was good on a pair of field goals.
Drew Cassidy beat the horn with a 32-yard field goal for UVA Wise to send the game to intermission with the guests leading 27-10.
Brooks' third field goal of the afternoon made it a 30-10 affair before Julian Edwards darted in from six yards out to get the Cavs within 13 at 30-17.
Terrell essentially put the game out of reach with a 64-yard touchdown run with 6:47 to play in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 19-point lead.
UVA Wise would get within 12 when Markel Harrison caught a pass and outran the defense for a 76-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.
Neither school would score over the final 15 minutes however the Cavs threatened. UVA Wise moved the ball to the red zone but an interception with 4:34 to play ended any hope of a comeback.
On the day, Barton accumulated 483 yards of offense with UVA Wise posting 436 yards of offense as both sides moved the ball up and down the field.
Kameron Johnson was Lynch's favorite target as the wideout caught six passes for 97 yards and touchdown. Lynch finished the game 13-for-23 through the air for 183 yards to go with his two passing touchdowns.
Redwine completed 15-of-29 passes for 292 yards and a pair of scores. The former Dobyns-Bennett Indian finished the season with 2,819 yards and 24 touchdowns. JJ McNeil III grabbed a team-high five catches for 58 yards while Jaevon Gillespie ran the ball 17 times for 69 yards.
Barton's Shane Perry and UVA Wise's Markel Dailey tied for game-high nine tackles. Cavalier Chavon Fields who entered the game as the reigning SAC Defensive Player of the Week tallied seven stops, including two tackles for loss and a sack.
The five wins by UVA Wise marks a three-win improvement from the 2019 season.
