CAVS LOOK TO HALT SKID AT LIMESTONE SATURDAY

WISE - - Two teams looking to halt losing streaks lock horns at The Reservation Saturday when UVA Wise visits Limestone in a 4 p.m. kickoff. The home standing Saints are winless on the season at 0-6 and are being outscored on average 36.3-to-11.2 points per game. Injuries have hampered Head Coach Brian Turk's team.

Most notably, all-conference running back Jerko'ya Patton has been limited to 47 carries this season. The redshirt senior is averaging 5.5 yards per carry but ran the ball just twice in last week's lost to Lenoir-Rhyne. In the spring, Patton ran the ball 31 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns as the Saints defeated the Cavaliers 30-24.

Turnovers and the inability to force turnovers have played a role in the slow start for the Saints also. Through six games, Limestone has forced just four turnovers while having turned it over 14 times.

UVA Wise began the year 3-2 but has lost three consecutive games to enter the game at 3-5. During the current three-game losing skid, Dane Damron's team has been the victim of missed opportunities.

Thus far, the Cavs are 3-1 when winning the turnover battle while having yet to win a game when losing the turnover battle. During the current losing streak, UVA Wise has forced just two turnovers while having forced a total of 15 on the season.

Of the 15 forced turnovers, 12 have been interceptions. The number leads the conference and ranks eighth among all NCAA Division II schools. Pressure has played an important role in forcing the interceptions as defensive coordinator Matthew White's unit is the league leader in sacks per game at 3.88 per game. The Cavs have also taken advantage of strong punting and coverage. UVA Wise leads the league and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II in net punting at 38.3 yards per punt.

The passing game continues to lead the Cavs offense. Quarterback Lendon Redwine leads the South Atlantic Conference in passing yards (1,973) and completions per game (23.9) while wide receiver Devin Heckstall is second in the league in receiving yards per game (83.1).

This will be the third all-time meeting between Limestone and UVA Wise. The Saints have won each of the first two meetings by an average of 13.5 points per game. Following the game, the Cavs will visit Catawba next week for the final road game of the season before returning home in two weeks to wrap up the season on Senior Day 2021 against Barton.
