Cavaliers Drop Road Test at No. 6 LMU

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Men's basketball fell 111-72 to No. 6/2 Lincoln Memorial University Monday evening inside the B. Frank "Tex" Turner Arena. UVA Wise had five players score in double-figures led by junior Cameron Whiteside's 18-point effort.

Redshirt junior Briggs Parris added 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Junior Kaeleb Carter finished with 11 points while freshman Isaiah McAmis' 11 points and sophomore Drew Greene's 10 point performance marked season-highs for both McAmis and Greene.

UVA Wise (0-8, 0-8) and LMU (9-1, 7-1) battled early but the Railsplitters managed to pull away midway through the first half to extend their advantage to double-digits as the Cavs struggled to climb from behind.

The two teams opened the game trading shots behind the arc with McAmis and Greene knocking down back-to-back triples for the Cavs to take a 6-3 lead less than two minutes into the contest.

LMU's Devin Whitfield opened the scoring for the Railsplitters as he collected the team's first eight points pulling LMU ahead 11-8 with 16:21 to play in the first.

UVA Wise climbed back within six on Green's second three of the night, 17-11, with 13:20 to play.

As UVA Wise trailed by nine, freshman Bradley Dean scored his first points of the night, connecting on a shot from behind the arc to cut the margin, 22-16.

With just under 11 minutes on the clock, LMU gained its first double-digit advantage of the game, but another three for the Cavs by Whiteside put UVA Wise down by nine, 32-23 with 7:09 left in the half.

A nearly three-minute scoring drought for UVA Wise was halted on a shot in the paint by Whiteside, with UVA Wise still trailing 37-25 at the 4:26 mark.

The Railsplitters used a late 9-0 to pull away for a 46-26 advantage with 2:28 to go as LMU held a 56-30 lead into the break.

UVA Wise shot 40 percent (12-for-30) from the field to start and made a single trip to the charity stripe, going 1-for-1 at the line. Whiteside led the Cavs with 12 points while Greene had six points early.

LMU's Devin Whitfield concluded the half with 25 points while Cameron Henry added 12 points.

A quick 6-2 run for UVA Wise put the Cavs down 58-36 with 18:30 to go as Whiteside connected on his shot at the free throw line.

LMU continued to extend its lead as the Railsplitters held a 40-point advantage, 89-49, with 7:34 left in the half.

The deficit would be too much for the Cavs to overcome as Lincoln Memorial picked up a 111-72 win at home.

Coach Mellinger's team finished the night shooting 40.7 percent from the floor and 73.7 percent from the line.

LMU was aided by 55.3 percent shooting from the field in the game and outscored the Cavs in the paint 46-28.

The Railsplitters will visit Wise Wednesday evening for a contest inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
