UVA Wise Outlasted by No. 5 LMU

WISE – UVA Wise dropped its second consecutive game against No. 5 Lincoln Memorial University Wednesday night inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center, 92-66.

Junior guard Cameron Whiteside led the Cavaliers (0-9, 0-9 SAC) in scoring with 10 points and added a career-high seven assists. Redshirt sophomore Joseph Keenan posted a career-high nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from three-point range while freshman Bradley Dean scored a season-high seven points on 3-of-4 shooting.

It was a battle to start as the two teams traded shots to open the first half, but a Railsplitter (10-1, 8-1 SAC) foul put redshirt junior Briggs Parris at the line as he knocked down a trio of shots to put the Cavs in front, 9-7, with a little under 15 minutes to go in the half.

Less than a minute later, back-to-back three-pointers by Whiteside and sophomore Izeah Parker gave UVA Wise its largest lead of the game, up 12-7.

Lincoln Memorial slowly climbed back to regain the lead as they held a 27-21 advantage with 5:41 to play in the opening half.

The Railsplitters gained its first double-digit margin of the night late in the first half as LMU held a 13-point lead, 38-25, going into intermission.

Both teams posted 10 points in the paint while UVA Wise recorded 14 points off of 11 LMU turnovers in the first half.

The Railsplitters won the rebounding battle early, 22-10, and shot 48.3 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc.

LMU took a 16-point lead to start the second half on a three by Cameron Henry.

UVA Wise used a quick run to cut the deficit back to 11 on a triple by sophomore Drew Greene.

As the Railsplitters extended their lead, another scoring spurt for the Cavs pulled UVA Wise within 14 on another three-point shot by Parker, 54-40, with 13:25 to play.

After trailing by 17 points, UVA Wise climbed back to a 13-point margin on back-to-back shots by Whiteside and Carter, with a little under 11 minutes to go.

LMU used an 18-4 run over four minutes to pull ahead by 25 points with just under seven minutes on the clock.

The Railsplitters gained its largest advantage of the night at the 2:51 mark, 87-56, and held on for a 92-66 victory.

UVA Wise finished the second half with 12 points in the paint and 23 points from the bench. The Cavs shot 46.9 percent from the floor while LMU outrebounded UVA Wise 23-9 in the closing frame.

Freshman Ben Bryson recorded nine points on 4-of-7 shooting while Parker had eight points and went 2-for-2 from downtown. Whiteside led the Cavs with four rebounds as freshman Isaiah McAmis had a team-best three steals.

The Cavs shot 41.4 percent from the field on the night as LMU finished shooting 54 percent from the floor. The Railsplitters won the rebounding battle 45-19 and totaled 30 assists and 18 turnovers.

Head Coach Blake Mellinger's squad will return to the Prior Center Saturday afternoon for a SAC matchup with Newberry College. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
