Cavaliers Outlasted by Palm Beach Atlantic in Overtime

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – UVA Wise dropped its nonconference matchup against Palm Beach Atlantic University, 16-15, in overtime on the road Monday night.

Tied at 15-15 at the end of regulation, Sailfish (4-3) sophomore attacker Kiki Cinotti scored with 3:22 left on the clock in overtime to secure the 16-15 win.

Six Cavaliers (2-4) scored led by sophomore Ellie Earnshaw who totaled five goals on the night. Freshman attacker Sydney Trask notched her first career hat trick with three goals in the loss. In the net, senior Elsa Girardo tallied 12 saves for UVA Wise while sophomore Caroline Earnshaw won a team-high seven draw controls.

UVA Wise scored three-straight goals to open the contest, jumping out to a 5-1 lead with 17:04 to go in the first frame. Palm Beach Atlantic climbed from behind to get within two before tying the game at 7-7 heading into the break.

After knotting the contest two more times in the second half, the Cavs took a 13-10 lead on a 4-0 run with 9:19 left to play. The Sailfish responded with four goals of their own to take a 14-13 advantage at the 2:32 mark.

Palm Beach Atlantic gained a late lead twice in the second half, but goals by senior Jesse French and Trask helped to send the game into overtime as the Sailfish outlasted the Cavs, 16-15.

Palm Beach Atlantic outshot UVA Wise 37-29 with the Sailfish adding nine saves on the night. Palm Beach Atlantic picked up 25 ground balls to 18 for the Cavs while both teams converted 16-of-16 clear attempts.

Head coach Meghan Dennehy's squad will finish their Florida trip Wednesday against the Fighting Knights of Lynn University with game time slated for 5 p.m.
