WISE - - On a day when runs came at a premium, UVA Wise and Shepherd split a non-conference softball doubleheader at Cavalier Field. Alexis Miles broke up a no-hitter with a walk off three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to provide the host Cavaliers with a 3-0 win in the opener before Rams' hurler Katie Laing tossed a complete game one hitter in a 1-0 Shepherd triumph.
UVA Wise (10-12) left runners on in the first, third, fifth and sixth before leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.
With the international tiebreak rule in effect, the Cavs started the eighth with a runner on second with nobody out. McKenna Falwell began the inning on second and after a walk to Casey Chambers, both women moved up a bag on a passed ball. At that point, Miles blasted the game-winning three-run blast over the left field wall.
Shepherd (4-6) struggled all day with Falwell in the circle. The freshman hurler fanned nine over eight innings of work while scattering three hits and allowing just one walk to improve to 5-5 on the year.
The Rams received hits from Nicole Purtell, Ashley Burger and Hannah Beeler in the loss.
Shepherd starter Sarah Lamper fell to 1-1 on the season as she fanned a season-high 13. The pitcher did walk nine batters in the game while also hitting a hitter in the defeat.
Game two saw the Rams jump out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Lindsey Anderson RBI groundout.
It would be enough for Laing in the circle as she did not allow a hit until the sixth inning when Nikki Smith doubled with an out in the inning before Laing retired the next two batters
UVA Wise starter Raychel Lapallo was the hard luck loser as she scattered five hits, allowing an unearned run as she fell to 3-1 on the year.
The team is back in action Tuesday at home against St. Augustine's.
