Softball Drops Pair on Sunday

GREENWOOD, S.C. - - UVA Wise softball wrapped up play in the Bearcat Round Robin Sunday, the Cavaliers dropped game one 10-1 to Emmanuel before falling 2-1 to host Lander in the finale.

Game one saw Emmanuel (6-7) strike for five runs in the top of the first inning and never look back. The Saints took advantage of a pair of UVA Wise (6-10) errors while stringing together five hits in what proved to be the decisive inning.

The Saints took advantage of another Cavalier error to tack on two more runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead after two innings of play.

Emmanuel would eventually take a 10-0 lead and a no-hitter to the fifth before senior Nikki Smith led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on a base hit by Riley Hunt to provide the final 10-1 margin.

Offense proved to be an issue in game two for the Cavaliers as well. Lander would take a 1-0 lead in the second on a run-scoring hit by Shannon Antonini only to see UVA Wise tie it on a solo homer by Katie Russell in the third inning.

The only other run of the game in the home half of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Vinson.

McKenna Falwell was the hard luck loser in the circle as she allowed just one earned run in the complete game effort to fall to 3-5 on the year.

UVA Wise had four players line one hit each in the contest.

Next up, the Cavs are scheduled to open South Atlantic Conference play at home Tuesday against Tusculum.
