GREENWOOD, S.C. - - UVA Wise softball split a pair of games on the opening day of the Bearcat Round Robin. Game one saw the Cavaliers claim a 2-1 win over Emmanuel behind a complete game pitching effort from freshman McKenna Falwell and a game-winning RBI single by Casey Chambers before falling 9-8 in eight innings to Walsh (Ohio).
Emmanuel took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Lisa Tallent only to see UVA Wise counter with a solo shot off the bat of Julia Hoy in the home half of the frame to tie the score.
The Cavs would win the game on a run-scoring single by Casey Chambers in the bottom of the seventh to score Kate Russell.
Falwell was masterful in the circle as she fanned 11 while scattering three hits in the complete game effort.
Riley Hunt and Chambers had two hits each in the win to pace a six-hit effort for the Cavaliers.
Game two was a slugfest as the Walsh Cavaliers built a 6-0 lead over the first 4 ½ innings before the Cavaliers from UVA Wise began battling back.
Alexis Miles worked a bases loaded walk to make it a 6-1 game in the home fifth before a grand slam by Kaylee Jones made it a 6-5 game after six innings of play.
Walsh scored an unearned run to go to the bottom of the seventh leading 7-5.
Down to its final three outs, UVA Wise continued to battle. Hunt homered to lead off the frame before Taylor Woodlief scored the tying run on an infield fly ball.
Walsh would work out of the inning to force extras before scoring a pair of runs on an error in the top of the inning to take a 9-7 lead to the bottom of the eighth.
Hunt would single in Chambers to make it a 9-8 game with one out in the inning. UVA Wise would appear to be on the verge of tying or winning the game with runners on the corner and one out. However, back-to-back hitters would strikeout and Walsh would hang on for the win.
UVA Wise will wrap up play in the event tomorrow with a game against Emmanuel and Lander.
