On the Road Again - Baseball Visits Tusculum for Three Game Set

The Tusculum Series
  • After originally being scheduled to played in Wise, the three-game series will now be played in Greeneville, Tenn. due to excessive snow in the Wise area.
  • Right-hander Will Stamper is scheduled to make his second start of the season in the series opener.
  • Game two starter on the mound Greg Duncan continues to move his way up the career leaderboard. The right-hander is 15 strikeouts shy of becoming the third player in school history of reaching 200 career strike outs.
  • Senior catcher Tyler Blaum has a hit in 11 of the first 13 game's this season. Blaum enters the series with six hits in the last four games as part of a four-game hitting streak.
  • Tusculum is led by junior Gunner Becker on the mound. Becker has posted a 0.87 ERA over his first 20 2/3 innings pitched of 2020.
  • At the plate, the Pioneers are led by senior Daulton Martin. Martin is hitting a team-high .345 having lined five doubles with a triple and a homer. A good base runner, Martin has already swiped 11 bases this spring.
Inside SAC Action
  • Mars Hill, Coker, Catawba, Newberry and Anderson all claimed SAC wins on Friday.
  • Catawba is on a 13-game winning streak and is ranked sixth latest in the NCBWA Poll. The Indians are one of two ranked SAC schools, Newberry is ranked 15th nationally and is slated to travel to Wise next weekend for what will now become the home opener for UVA Wise.
  • Overall, SAC teams are 104-88 this season. The 88 losses include 21 losses inside the conference.
  • Catawba's Hunter Shepherd was named Player of the Week while Anderson's Lucas Smith was named Pitcher of the Week last week. Shepherd hit .389 while slugging .989; meanwhile, Smith tossed a complete game five-hitter in a win over Coker.
Odd Facts
  • Despite playing on the road, UVA Wise will bat last during the series due to it originally being scheduled to be played in Wise.
  • It is now possible the Cavaliers could play 17 consecutive road games before ever playing at Stallard Field in 2020.
