Jones Homers Twice but Cavs Drop DH to Bobcats

WISE - - Lees McRae College extended its season opening winning streak to four with a doubleheader sweep of UVA Wise at Cavalier Field Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats plated three runs in the seventh inning to win game one 7-4 before a two-run homer by Hanna Foster in the sixth inning of game two proved to be the difference in a 3-1 triumph.

Lees McRae (4-0) took the lead on a wild pitch in the seventh inning before tacking on two more runs on a Caitlyn Ray's two-run single to make it a 7-4 game.

UVA Wise (5-7) would get the tying run to the plate as Kaylee Jones singled to lead off the inning but a groundball double play would end the threat, preserving the win for Lees McRae.

The Cavs took a 4-1 lead in the game behind an RBI single by Raychel Lappallo and a solo homer by Jones.

The Bobcats crawled back into the contest behind three errors and a run-scoring double from Johanna McKinley.

Jones finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and a walk to go with the solo homer.

Charlsy Traylor earned the win in the circle by firing him a complete game seven-hitter. She allowed four runs (one earned). The win moved her to 2-0 on the year inside the circle.

Game two saw UVA Wise jump out in front again behind the offensive efforts of Jones. The Coeburn, Va. product blasted a solo homer in the home first to put her club in front 1-0.

The score would remain unchanged until Foster's two run shot in the sixth before a Faith Cooke RBI single in the seventh provided the winning 3-1 margin.

McKenna Falwell was the hard luck loser in the circle. The freshman struck out nine as she scattered six hits in the complete game effort.

Cassidy Largen improved to 2-0 as she fanned eight, walked four and allowed five hits in her complete game effort.

The pair of homers by Jones tie her with teammate Alexis Miles for the team lead. Jones is now batting .514 on the year while slugging 1.057 while posting a 1.652 OPS through the season's first 12 games.

UVA Wise is slated to begin South Atlantic Conference play Tuesday at home against Tusculum.
