CHARLESTON, W. Va. – UVA Wise women's lacrosse picked up their second win of the season in a 16-5 rout of the University of Charleston on the road Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) scored the first goal of the afternoon as UVA Wise (2-0) responded quickly with a goal by freshman Sydney Trask to even the score. The Cavaliers went on a hot streak with six more unanswered goals to pull ahead 7-1 at the 11:57 mark.
Charleston found the back of the night two more times before the Cavaliers scored back-to-back goals on a free position shot by sophomore Ellie Earnshaw and a goal by freshman Ashley Shannon.
Charleston scored twice to start the second half, cutting the Cavs margin to 10-5 with 24:29 left to play in the game. UVA Wise quickly gained a double-digit advantage, scoring four goals in less than four minutes to take a 15-5 lead at the 13:23 mark.
Ellie Earnshaw's goal with 3:34 on the clock would be the last of the evening as the Cavs gained their second victory of the campaign.
Three Cavs scored a hat trick with Ellie Earnshaw leading the team with a game-high four goals while sophomore Caroline Earnshaw and senior Ashley Wells each had three goals in the win. Juniors Riley Fenster and Samantha Hill each scored their first goals of the season while freshman Ashley Shannon found the back of the net for her first career goal.
Fenster totaled a team-high four draw controls and added two caused turnovers to her stat line. Senior Jesse French finished with a game-high four assists and recorded two draw controls.
Sophomore Kameryn Darrington registered a game-high seven ground balls and had three caused turnovers in the win. Freshman Sydney Trask led the Cavs with four caused turnovers and added two goals, one assist, and three ground balls.
Senior Elsa Girardo and freshman Jordan Edwards split time between the posts as Girardo improved to 2-0 on the season with four saves in the net while Edwards added a save.
UVA Wise converted 14-of-15 clear attempts and picked up 28 ground balls to 21 for Charleston. The Cavs gained 13 draw controls while the Golden Eagles totaled 10 on the day.
Head coach Meghan Dennehy's team is back in action next weekend for a 6 p.m. draw against Lee University (Tenn.) Friday on the road.
