ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - - Alexis Miles homered twice, including a seventh inning grand slam in game one as UVA Wise wrapped up its three-day, six-game road trip in Florida with a pair of wins over Eckerd College Monday. Miles' grand slam highlighted an 8-5 Cavaliers in in the opener before going 3-for-3 with a homer in the 5-3 win in the night cap.
With the two home runs Miles now has 21 in her UVA Wise (5-3) career to move to sole possession of fifth all-time in school history.
The outfielder was hitless in the opener when she stepped to the plate with her club up 4-3 in the seventh inning of the opener.
Miles would belt a two-out grand slam off of Eckerd (6-5) hurler Kensley Durrance to bust the game open.
The Cavs would hold off a Tritons rally in the home seventh to win the opener as Kailyn Spencer earned the win in the circle by pitching five innings of relief. The right-hander would scatter four hits, allowing three runs (two earned), while fanning two without a walk to pick up her first pitching win of 2020.
UVA Wise lined nine hits in the win with Taylor Woodlief homered as part of a two-hit effort while McKenna Falwell also finished with two hits.
Game two saw the Cavs take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and lead wire-to-wire to complete the sweep.
Miles singled in Woodlief for the game's opening run before homering in the fourth to make it a 2-0 game.
In the fifth, Casey Chambers knocked in Kaylee Jones on a RBI groundout after Jones tripled to lead off the inning before UVA Wise tacked on a single run in the sixth on a Jones run-scoring base hit and a run in the seventh on a Kailey Huffman RBI hit.
Leading 5-0, Raychel Lapallo surrendered three runs (two earned) in the seventh to polish off the complete game win in the circle. Lapallo is now 2-0 on the year as she scattered four hits in the win.
Jones joined Miles with three hits in the win while Huffman finished 2-for-4 to lead an 11-hit attack.
UVA Wise has now won three consecutive games and finished its trip to the Sunshine State 3-3.
Next up, the Cavs will play their home opener Saturday when the Tornado of King University visit Cavalier Field for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
