SAINT LEO, Fla. - - Julia Hoy cracked a two-run homerun as part of a three-RBI game while McKenna Falwell went the distance in the circle as UVA Wise downed No. 25 Saint Leo 3-2 in non-conference softball action at University Softball Field Sunday afternoon. The win allowed the Cavaliers to split a pair of games on the day, the school fell 6-1 to Flagler in a Sunday morning tilt.
The win over the No. 25 Lions marks the second consecutive season UVA Wise has defeated a nationally ranked foe in non-conference action. Last spring, the Cavs knocked off now conference mate No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne.
UVA Wise (3-3) played stellar defense throughout the win, including in the first inning when the Katie Russell threw out a would be base stealer and Taylor Woodlief made a run-saving catch in the outfield.
Saint Leo (9-3) entered the game on a three-game winning streak but, thoughts of extending the streak came in doubt in the top of the second when Hoy cranked a two-run homer over the left field wall to plate Falwell.
The Lions would threaten to get on the board in the third inning as the hosts had runners on second and third with two outs in the inning when Kailey Huffman snagged a deep fly ball near the wall to end the threat.
Saint Leo would tie the game with two outs in the home sixth on a two-run homer by Bethany Kursch to set the stage for the top of the seventh.
Russell would work a two-out walk in the top of the seventh and score all the way from first base on what proved to be a game-winning single by Hoy.
In the home seventh, the Lions would not go down without a fight. Emily Pilon doubled to lead off the inning and after Brigette Soza failed to get a bunt down, she eventually struck out for the first out of the inning.
After a sharp ground out to the right side moved Pilon to third, Falwell fanned Kacie Kelly for the game's final out.
Kelly entered the at bat 2-for-2 in the game as she led a five-hit effort in the loss.
UVA Wise had just three hits in the game, Falwell had a single prior to Hoy's two-run blast in the second.
In the circle, Falwell improved to 2-1 as she finished with six strikeouts against two walks while surrendering five hits in the 107-pitch complete game effort.
On the season, the freshman has a 0.78 ERA over her first three collegiate appearances.
Game one of the afternoon saw senior Raychel Lapallo crack her first homer of the season in a 6-1 setback to Flagler.
Casey Chambers and Woodlief each went 2-for-3 in the game as UVA Wise finished with six hits but was unable to overcome a four run third inning that saw the Saints send nine hitters to the plate.
UVA Wise will wrap up its six game Florida trip tomorrow with a doubleheader at Eckerd College.
