Softball Drops Pair in Florida

SAINT LEO, Fla. - -  UVA Wise dropped a pair of games in Florida Saturday as the school's softball team began a three-day, six-game swing in the Sunshine State. The Cavaliers dropped a 3-0 decision to Flagler College in the morning before falling in five innings 11-0 to No. 25 Saint Leo in the afternoon.

In the first game of the day, UVA Wise (2-2) was unable to capitalize on a strong pitching performance by freshman right-hander McKenna Falwell. The Nottoway High School graduate did not allow an earned run over six innings of work while fanning four and not walking a batter.

Falwell added a double and a walk at the plate but, the Cavaliers stranded 11 runners on base and committed a trio of errors in the loss.

Flagler (7-2) broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when the speed of NaJah Gerrald paid dividends. The outfielder beat out a throw to first and forced an errant throw that allowed her to move to second. A batter later, she stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 contest.

The other runs of the game came on a two-run homer by Kyleigh Taylor when an error with two outs extended the frame.

Katie Russell was the lone Cav with multiple hits in the game as she finished 2-for-3 to lead an eight-hit effort for UVA Wise.

Game two was all Saint Leo (8-2) from the start. The Lions erupted for 10 runs over the first three innings to take control of the game and never look back en route to the run-rule triumph.

Grace Spitulski finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored while Kacie Kelly was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ali Jaquith added a pair of hits and runs scored and Kayleigh Hooks finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the circle, Kayla Betts (2-1) carried a no-hitter to the fourth before an infield single by Kaylee Jones broke up the bid.

UVA Wise will be back in action tomorrow to face the same two teams beginning at 10 a.m. when co-head coach Nick and Karen Bitter's squad faces off with Flagler.
