CENTRAL, S.C. - - A pair of former Central High School Warriors Zack James and Nate Thompson started and finished the game for UVA Wise Friday as the Cavaliers knocked off the host Southern Wesleyan Spartans 6-5 in non-conference baseball action at Connor Field.
James started on the mound for UVA Wise (5-3) and tossed four innings allowing two earned runs, striking out two and walking one while scattering four hits.
James' strong start allowed the Cavs' offense to build a lead as Hank Banner's club built a 5-0 lead after 2 ½ innings.
Senior Gabe Wurtz had a sacrifice fly in the top of the first for the game's first run before a run-scoring single by Tristan Peccerelli staked James to a 2-0 lead before firing his first pitch.
Southern Wesleyan (3-4) would fall behind 5-0 after a three-run third inning by the visitors. The Cavaliers would do the damage after the first two hitters of the inning were retired.
Peccerelli would line a two-out single as would Tyler Horvath to put a man in scoring position. Senior Matthew Branham would continue his hot start to the season with a run-scoring single. A hitter later Jordon Turner knocked in Horvath to make it a 4-0 game before getting in a run down allowing Branham to scamper home with the fifth run of the game.
The Spartans would take advantage of a pair of Cavalier errors to push a pair across in the third inning to make it a 5-2 score.
In the top of the fourth, UVA Wise took advantage of an error and a Dawson Cagle RBI groundout to make it a 6-2 contest.
The Cavs would hang on from there as the bullpen duo of James Balogh and Nate Thompson would allow two runs over the game's final five innings.
Balogh would be credited with the mound win, the first of his UVA Wise career as he struck out two and allowed an unearned run in two innings of work.
Thompson would notch the three inning save, allowing an earned run while striking out five.
Peccerelli and Branham would line two hits each to pace a nine-hit effort for the Cavs in the win.
The series concludes tomorrow with a pair of seven inning games. Game one is set for 12 p.m.
