Baseball Begins Three-Game Set at Southern Wesleyan Friday

VSU Series Recap

UVA Wise took the series 3-to-1 behind a patient offensive attack. The Cavaliers walked 28 times and were hit by 11 pitches in the four games.
Senior catcher Tyler Blaum hit .727 in the series while UVA Wise hit .310 as a team in the set.
Freshman Shawn Campbell picked up the first mound win of his collegiate career. The right-hander struck out six while not allowing a run over four innings of work.

Inside SAC Action

The South Atlantic Conference continues to impress in non-conference play. As a league, the SAC is 48-39 while Newberry remains undefeated at 8-0.
Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) and John DeFazio (Coker) earned SAC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors last week. Shepherd led the Indians to a 3-0 record last week as he hit .600 with three homers. DeFazio tossed a complete game in a win over Alderson Broaddus.

The Southern Wesleyan Series

Southern Wesleyan leads the all-time series 9-to-3. The Spartans swept a three-game series against the Cavaliers last spring and have won five of the last six in the series.
Southern Wesleyan is off to a 3-3 start this season behind strong pitching. The Spartans have allowed four or fewer runs in five of the season's first six games.
UVA Wise is off to its best start as a NCAA Division II when it comes to fielding the baseball. Hank Banner's club has committed just three errors through the first seven games to post a .985 fielding percentage.
Senior Tyler Blaum recently became the third catcher in program history to eclipse 200 total bases for his career. Currently, Blaum ranks 17th in school history with 204 total bases.
Senior right-hander Greg Duncan continues to climb the all-time strikeout list at UVA Wise. Duncan currently sits seventh with 167 strikeouts and is just seven strikeouts shy of fifth place where Ryan Crosby and David Jones are tied with 174 strikeouts.
