Six Cavs Score in Double Figures in Home Opening Win

WISE - - Six UVA Wise players scored in double figures, including redshirt junior Meg Crawford who netted a team-high 15 points, in Saturday's 88-81 South Atlantic Conference victory over Coker at the Prior Center.

UVA Wise (1-1, 1-0 SAC) built a 46-29 halftime advantage but had to fend off a late Coker (0-2, 0-2 SAC) run to secure the win in the home opener.

The Cobras cut the lead to six with 2:29 to play when Ahlea Myers canned one her game-high seven 3-pointers. The Cavaliers responded with a quartet of made free throws, two each by guards Caitlyn Ross and Hanna Oliver to make the score 81-71 with less than two minutes remaining.

It would be as close as Coker would get as the Cavs salted the game away by going 23-of-25 from the charity stripe.

Jamie Cluesman's team built the early advantage by feeding the paint. Crawford scored 11 of her 15 points in the half while fellow frontcourt mate Ada Stanley tossed in five of her 14 points in the opening 20 minutes en route to the 17-point advantage at intermission.

UVA Wise would push its lead to as many 21 points in the third quarter when Stanley nailed a pair of foul shots to make it a 54-33 affair at the 7:11 mark of the third quarter.

Coker was able to get the lead to single digits late in the third period when Haley McClure completed an old fashioned 3-point play making the score 63-54.

The Cobras would just score three points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and the slow start to the period would prove to be pivotable. Ross who scored all 11 of her points in the second half, made a shot inside with 3:35 to play to make it a 77-64 with 3:35 remaining.

Coker would then go a 7-0 run, capped by Myers' triple, before UVA Wise would close the game out to secure its second consecutive win over the Cobras.

After being beaten on the boards in its season opening loss at Tusculum, UVA Wise tied Cobra in rebounds at 44 each.

The Cavs continued their strong shooting from beyond the 3-point line by finishing 9-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Oliver finished a 3-pointer shy of her career-high with four made 3-pointers while freshman Peyton Sams was a perfect 2-of-2 from distance.

Kaylee Johnson posted a double-double in the win with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Nia Vanzant posted 13 points, three rebounds and five assists.

UVA Wise finished with 21 fast break points while scoring 18 points off of 16 Coker turnovers.

Crawford continued to be a force on both ends of the floor with four blocks in 14 minutes of action.

Myers finished with a game-high 25 points in defeat while Raya Coley added 17 points and Ashauntee Nelson chipped in 10 points for Coker.

Next up, the Cavs will travel to Wingate for a 5:30 p.m. tip Wednesday against the Bulldogs. The action can be heard live on FM 92.5 WLSD or online at wlsdradio.com
