HARROGATE, Tenn. - - Host Lincoln Memorial University held UVA Wise to its worst shooting performance of the season, 37.7 percent, as the Railsplitters claimed a 76-62 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory at Tex Turner Arena Wednesday.
LMU (5-6, 4-3 SAC) broke open an 11-11 tie after the opening quarter by outscoring the guests 26-14 in the second quarter.
Shermeria Quarles came off the bench and scored 11 of her team-high 16 points in the period while UVA Wise (7-6, 3-4 SAC) connected on just three made field goals in the quarter.
The poor shooting first half proved to be too much to overcome for Jamie Cluesman's team as the Railsplitters built a 57-35 advantage moving to the fourth quarter.
The Cavaliers did mount a comeback bid behind the play of freshman guard Nia Vanzant. Vanzant made a season-high five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points with all five triples coming in the second half.
Her last long range shot came with 1:36 to play which made the score 71-61; it would be as close as the Cavs would get as the hosts closed the game by scoring five of the game's final six points to halt what was a three-game losing skid.
LMU dominated the glass in the contest, outrebounding UVA Wise 44-29 in the win.
Cavalier senior Cynita Webb notched her 10th double-double of the season as she scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The 11 points give the forward 1,014 for her career to pass former UVA Wise forward Meghan Rutherford for 17th on the school's all-time scoring list.
Kalee Johnson was the third UVA Wise player to reach double figures as she scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting.
In addition to Quarles, LMU saw Kyndall Caudle (11), Lauren Flowers (10), Lindsay Proffitt (10) and Sydney Newsome (10) reach at least 10 points in the contest.
Proffitt, Newsome and Quarles all scored their points coming off the bench as LMU enjoyed a 45-28 advantage in bench scoring.
