Four Cavs Score in Double Figures in Loss at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - Host Carson-Newman University made 18 3-pointers en route to a 100-79 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over UVA Wise Wednesday evening.

UVA Wise (8-9, 4-7 SAC) built an early 6-0 lead before Carson-Newman (12-5, 8-3 SAC) erupted for 27 first quarter points to take a 10-point lead after 10 minutes of play.

The early lead would prove to be too much to overcome as the Eagles would lead by as many as 29 points in the contest before settling for the 21-point triumph.

Braelyn Wykle made 7-of-12 3-pointers as part of a career-high 29 points to lead all scorers in the win while teammate Kayla Marosites tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the victors.

Four of five Cavalier starters finished in double figures, including Kalee Johnson's team-high 22 points. Freshman Caitlyn Ross posted the second-double of her career with 21 points and 11 assists. The guard added five steals and four rebounds to her stat line.

Freshman forward Leah Kestner had the best game of her young career by scoring a season-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Kestner added six rebounds and block in 37 minutes of action. Junior Hanna Oliver rounded out the double-figure scoring as she scored 10 points and added three assists.

Carson-Newman controlled the glass as the hosts grabbed 20 offensive rebounds as part of a 52-to-29 advantage on the boards. The Eagles had 21 second chance points while the Cavs failed to record a second chance point. Carson-Newman also enjoyed a healthy margin in bench points winning 37-to-2 in the category.

The Eagles shot 45 percent from the field for the game while making 46 percent of their 3-point attempts, the team was also proficient from the foul line connecting on 10-of-11 free throws.

The game was the first of three straight on the road for UVA Wise. Jamie Cluesman's team will be back in action Saturday at nationally ranked Anderson for a 2 p.m. tip.
