WISE - - UVA Wise erased its fourth quarter woes in a big way Saturday as the women's basketball team erupted for 26 fourth quarter points to overcome a two point deficit en route to a 73-59 win over Coker in South Atlantic Conference action at the Prior Center.
UVA Wise (8-8, 4-6 SAC) freshman Nia Vanzant had arguably the best game of her young collegiate career. The guard poured in a game-high 21 points while corralling 10 rebounds to secure her first career double-double. Vanzant's play was paramount in the fourth quarter comeback as she netted eight points in the period, including a 3-pointer with 2:30 to play that started a 17-4 run by the Cavaliers to close the game.
Coker (4-10, 1-9 SAC) took a 49-47 lead to the fourth quarter behind the play of forward Erin Houser. Houser was a menace on the glass as she grabbed 10 offensive rebounds as part of a 19-rebound day. Houser was 3-of-4 from the field in the third quarter while also making 3-of-4 foul shots as the Cobras scored nine second chance points in the period.
The foul line was pivotal in the win for UVA Wise as Cluesman's squad went to the stripe 39 times converting 28 of the opportunities. Freshman Caitlyn Ross finished the game 10-of-12 from the line en route to 12 points while Vanzant made 8-of-12 foul shots.
A third freshman, Leah Kestner also made a positive impact for the Cavs. The Chilhowie, Va. product scored seven points but her 12 rebounds and two drawn charges provided the biggest boost for the club.
UVA Wise took the lead for good with 5:18 to play when junior Kalee Johnson drained a pair of free throws to give the hosts a 56-54 advantage. The free throws capped a quick five point stretch for Johnson, the forward had drilled a 3-pointer on the previous possession as part of a 13 point output.
Neither school shot the ball particularly well in the game. Coker finished the game 32.8 percent from the floor while UVA Wise shot 35.7 percent.
Whistles were plentiful in the contest with the Cobras being assessed 30 fouls and the Cavs 16 in the 40-minute affair. Coker had three players foul out with two more finishing the game with four fouls.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Cavs and moved the team into a tie for eighth place in the SAC standings. The top eight teams at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the league tournament.
