WISE – UVa-Wise volleyball commences its season this weekend at the UNC Pembroke Invitational. Due to inclement weather expected with Hurricane Dorian, the Cavaliers' four-match weekend has been altered with UVa-Wise now scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday. Head coach Kristen Salyer's team will kick off their season against Fayetteville State University at 3 p.m. before facing host institution UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m. Sunday evening. Admission to the tournament is free.

About UVa-Wise
- Coach Salyer's team finished 2018 with a 5-25 overall mark and were selected to finish 12th in this year's South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll. Redshirt senior Ciara Kain was named to the All-SAC Preseason Second Team.
- Kain makes her return to the court after missing last season due to injury. The outside hitter finished her junior campaign in 2017 with a team-high 369 kills and 317 digs while being named to the all-conference second team.
- Senior Briana Kerr led the Cavs in 2018 in service aces with 40 while senior Morgan Milligan notched a team-high 466 digs in addition to 63 assists (second-most) and 30 service aces (third-most).
- Makayla Ledford collected her 1,000th career assist last season and returns this year with a total 1,216 career assists. The junior setter tallied a team-high 896 assists during her sophomore year and added 247 digs. Fellow junior Madelyn Lawrence led the Cavs in two categories last season with 240 kills and 67 blocks.
- Sophomore Kelsey Green's performance last year earned her a spot on the all-conference freshman team and an all-conference honorable mention. The outside hitter finished her rookie season with 179 kills, 80 digs, and 28 blocks.
Notes on Fayetteville State University
- FSU volleyball has been tabbed to win the southern division and selected to finish No. 2 overall in the 2019 CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) preseason poll. The Broncos concluded last season with a 15-12 overall record before advancing to the CIAA Championship.
- Head Coach Reeshemah Johnson was named the 2018 Volleyball Coach of the Year by the CIAA at the end of last season while then-freshman Diamond Holmes was named to the All-CIAA rookie team after leading her squad with 197 kills.
- Senior Chynna Hunt returns to the court after being selected to the All-CIAA First Team at the utility position last year. Hunt was also named to the 2019 All-CIAA Preseason First Team as she finished the 2018 campaign with 140 kills and 40 blocks.
Notes on UNC Pembroke
- UNC Pembroke volleyball has been picked to finish seventh in the Peach Belt Conference preseason poll. The Braves wrapped up last season with a 10-21 overall mark.
- Head Coach Ellen McGill's team returns senior Anna Heinz who led her team in 2018 with 522 digs and added 74 assists. The libero is one of four seniors on the team this year.
- Sophomore Shannon Skryd also returns to the Braves after she tallied the second-most kills for UNCP last year with 239. In addition, Skryd notched 17 service aces, 285 digs, and 29 blocks in her rookie season.
