Champions Again, Cavalier Lacrosse Downs Cardinals to Earn Second League Crown

WISE - - UVa-Wise scored six consecutive goals to turn a 7-6 deficit to a 12-7 lead late in the first half as the Highland Cavaliers claimed a 22-14 Mountain East Conference win over Wheeling Jesuit at Carl Smith Stadium Friday. With the win, Meghan Dennhey's squad has claimed at least a share of their second consecutive MEC regular season title.

Senior Sydney Steinberg handed out a season-high five assists, including three during the pivotal 6-0 scoring spurt to lead UVa-Wise (10-6, 8-1 MEC) to the win. In the victory, Steinberg became the first player in school history to reach 100 assists and currently stands at 101 career assists following the game.

Sarah Artzer scored with 9:30 to play in the first half to give Wheeling Jesuit (10-6, 6-3 MEC) a 7-6 lead. It would be the final lead of the game for the Cardinals as the guests could get no closer than three goals at any point in the second half after trailing 12-8 at intermission.

The Cardinals' Mackenzie Kaderbeck led all players with six goals but, the balanced attack of the Cavaliers proved to be too much to overcome.

Junior Jesse French led all players with seven points as she netted four goals, fellow Cavs Caroline Earnshaw and Ashley Wells also added four goals while McKayla Grasham, Kristin Gobbi and Katie Allen all finished with three goals.

The three goals by Grasham keeps her streak of consecutive hat tricks alive. The Baltimore native has currently scored at least three goals in eight consecutive games. Overall, the senior has recorded 11 hat tricks this spring.

Jessica Apgar posted a game-high seven draw controls to aid UVa-Wise to a 25-13 advantage in the category.

The win locks up the right to host next week's league tournament for the Cavaliers, it will mark the second consecutive year the school has hosted the event.

Dennehy's team can win its second consecutive outright league title with a win Sunday against Notre Dame College. First draw is set for 11 a.m. from Smith Stadium; prior to the game, UVa-Wise will honor seniors Apgar, Gobbi, Grasham and Steinberg in senior day ceremonies.
