SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - Shepherd University halted the longest winning streak in Mountain East Conference history Saturday as the host Rams knocked off UVa-Wise 17-15 in women's lacrosse action. The loss was the first for the Cavaliers against a MEC opponent since May 5, 2017 when Shepherd knocked UVa-Wise out of the 2017 league tournament.
Shepherd (10-5, 7-2 MEC) scored four of the first five goals of the second half to overcome an 8-6 halftime deficit. Holding a 10-9 advantage with 15:57 to play, the Rams would never trail again as the hosts had an answer for each UVa-Wise (9-6, 7-1 MEC) run.
The Cavaliers tied the game at 10-10 on a woman-up goal by Ashley Wells, again at 11-11 when McKayla Grasham and once more at 12-12 on a Sydney Steinberg goal. Each time Shepherd had an answer, the Rams' Paige Alexander scored to make it a 13-12 game with 7:01 to play before Katherine Campbell would score two of her team-high four goals over the next 70 seconds to make it a 15-12 affair.
The three-goal spurt proved to be too much to overcome as UVa-Wise could get no closer than 16-15 when Grasham scored with 2:38 to play. Sidney Kelly scored for Shepherd with 1:17 to play to seal the victory and hand the Cavs their first league loss in two seasons.
Grasham had a monster day in defeat as the senior scored a game-high seven goals while also leading all players with eight draw controls. Wells and Steinberg netted two goals each as did Kristin Gobbi.
Next up, UVa-Wise will return home to face Wheeling Jesuit University Friday at 3 p.m.
