WISE - - UVa-Wise scored 10 unanswered goals in the second half to overcome a three-goal halftime deficit to post a 16-7 Mountain East Conference Women's lacrosse victory over the University of Charleston at Smith Stadium Saturday. With the win, the Cavaliers have won 14 consecutive league games to tie the conference record.
Senior McKayla Grasham led the scoring attack for UVa-Wise (8-5, 6-0 MEC) with a game-high four goals while fellow senior Jessica Apgar became the first player in program history to reach 200 career groundballs with four in the contest.
Charleston (4-8, 1-5 MEC) jumped out to an early two goal as Brianna Rock and Toriana Bates scored goals in the opening two minutes to give the guests a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead with 20:07 to play in the half when Aryanna Jones scored off a Rock assist.
It would be the final goal of the game for Charleston as the UVa-Wise defense forced 25 turnovers while goalie Elsa Girardo saved nine shots to record the win.
The Cavaliers finished with 48 shots compared to 19 for the Golden Eagles while also winning 17-of-25 contested draw controls.
In addition to Grasham, Jesse French (3) and Kristin Gobbi (3) also notched a hat trick in the league win.
Sydney Steinberg posted a game-high three assists while French added a pair of assists. Caroline Earnshaw finished with three points off two goals and added a game-high nine draw controls.
The switch seemed to flip for UVa-Wise at halftime; after leading just 6-3 at intermission, the Cavs scored nine goals in the first 8:45 of the second half to seize control of the contest.
Next up, the Cavs visit West Virginia Wesleyan Thursday for a 3 p.m. first draw.
