INSTITUTE, W. Va. - - UVa-Wise dropped its doubleheader to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State Saturday afternoon. The Cavs fell in five innings in game one, 8-0, before dropping game two to the Yellow Jackets, 7-2.
The Yellow Jackets (15-6, 8-2 MEC) scored at least one run in three of four innings with a four-run fourth giving West Virginia State the win in five frames as UVa-Wise (12-15, 6-6 MEC) was unable to score in the top of the fifth.
West Virginia State put the first run of the day on the board with a leadoff double before reaching third on a sacrifice hit. The Yellow Jackets would score on a UVa-Wise error on the next play to take an early 1-0 lead.
UVa-Wise looked to get on the board in the away half of the second with a leadoff walk for sophomore Kaylee Jones. Jones advanced a base on each of the next two at bats, but a pop up to she short stop left her stranded as West Virginia State maintained the lead.
The Yellow Jackets pushed across four more runs in the bottom of the second to gain a 4-0 lead over the Cavs. A leadoff walk put one base with a throwing error plating the runner on the next at bat and placing a runner on third. A pair of singles drove home two more for the Yellow Jackets as they took a 4-0 advantage to end the second.
A two-out double off the bat of junior Taylor Creasey in the top of the third put UVa-Wise in position to score once more but a foul out to the third baseman ended the top of the frame.
West Virginia State's Danielle Lebsock's leadoff homer tacked on more run in the home half of the fourth. A ground out and Cavalier throwing error pushed across two more before the Yellow Jackets rounded out the scoring on an RBI single for an 8-0 game two win.
Freshman pitcher Emilee Walker (3-1) picked up the win in the circle allowing just three hits and striking out three across five innings.
Collins fell to 3-3 on the year with the loss as she scattered six hits in 3 1/3 innings of work.
West Virginia State pulled ahead to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game two. The Yellow Jackets scored two more an inning later on a two-run blast for a 4-0 advantage. West Virginia then pushed across three more in the third on a three-run homer to take a 7-0 lead.
UVa-Wise scored its first run of the day in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Yellow Jackets lead. With one out, Creasey singled to right center before a two-out single by Jones. Creasey scored on the next play for an unearned run to cut West Virginia State's lead to 7-1.
The Yellow Jackets left two stranded in the bottom of the fourth as the Cavs looked to score in the top of the fifth. Senior Ava Hockey knocked a two-out single to center field before advancing to second on a wild pitch, but a fly out to left field ended the frame for UVa-Wise.
UVa-Wise looked to get another run on the board in the sixth inning with back-to-back singles by Jones and Bennett putting runners on first and third. West Virginia State pitcher Kasey Murphy caught the third out to head into the bottom with the Yellow Jackets still on top, 7-1.
The Cavs scored once again in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single to left field off the bat of Smith to score pinch hitter Taylor Woodlief, but the Yellow Jackets would hang on for a 7-2 victory over the Cavs in game two.
West Virginia State's Murphy improved to 4-2 on the season as she scattered six hits and struck out a pair in a complete game effort.
Sophomore Ashleigh Nalls fell to 0-2 on the season as she gave up five hits and fanned one in 1 1/3 innings in the circle.
UVa-Wise will stay on the road to face Concord University Wednesday with game one beginning at 3 p.m.
