WISE - - Friday, UVa-Wise put together its best start to a game of the season as the Cavaliers blitzed visiting West Virginia Wesleyan with 12 goals in the first 17 minutes of play en route to an 18-1 Mountain East Conference victory at Smith Stadium.
UVa-Wise (4-5, 2-0 MEC) pounced early as two goals by freshman Ellie Earnshaw and two goals by senior Kristin Gobbi along with a goal from junior Jesse French staked the hosts to a 5-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.
The start proved to be insurmountable for West Virginia Wesleyan (5-5, 0-3 MEC) as the guest surrendered goals to Abby Willis, Ashley Wells, Sydney Steinberg and Katie Allen along with three goals from Caroline Earnshaw to jump out 12-0.
The Bobcats lone goal of the game came from Madison Duvall when she scored unassisted at the 9:25 mark of the first half.
When the dust settled, 10 different Cavaliers had scored while Gobbi, Ellie Earnshaw, Caroline Earnshaw and McKayla Grasham all recorded hat tricks.
UVa-Wise dominated every facet of the game; Meghan Dennehy's squad out shot Wesleyan 32-to-11, posted 18 more shots on goal, won 15-of-21 draw controls and picked up five more groundballs.
In goal, Elsa Girardo collected nine saves while allowing just one goal to post her fourth win of hte season.
The Bobcats converted just 10-of-20 clear attempts in the game while the Cavs were successful on 11-of-13 attempts.
It was the first home win of the season for UVa-Wise who extended its winning streak over MEC foes to nine consecutive games.
The team will look to extend its program best nine game winning streak against league competition Sunday when Shepherd University visits Smith Stadium Sunday. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
