CHARLESTON, W. Va. - - Softball split its doubleheader with the University of Charleston Friday afternoon falling to the Golden Eagles 5-1 in the first game of the day before posting an 8-2 victory in game two.
Charleston (13-14, 4-6 MEC) scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning in game one. Back-to-back singles for the Golden Eagles placed two on base before a fielder's choice put a Charleston runner out at second. A two-out walk loaded the bases for Charleston before an RBI single scored one for the Golden Eagles.
UVa-Wise (12-13, 6-4 MEC) responded in the top of the second when sophomore Casey Chambers singled to the short stop before advancing to second on an error. Chambers scored an unearned run on the next play to knot the game, 1-1.
The Golden Eagles tried to put one more across in the home half of the second but a double play by the Cavs would get the third out to go into the top of the third frame.
UVa-Wise recorded a hit in the third and fourth inning but was unable to score as Charleston extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Eagles tacked on two more runs in the frame on a double and a ground out to extend their advantage to 3-1.
Charleston scored a run in both the fifth and sixth inning to go on to take game one, 5-1. Charleston finished with 12 hits and an error while the Cavs recorded five hits with no errors in the game.
Senior Ava Hockey led the Cavs with two hits while Chambers, Sydney Collins, and Shannon Bennett each recorded a hit.
Collins (3-2) suffered the loss as the freshman scattered nine hits with one strike out across 4 1/3 innings in the circle.
Charleston's Carley Turner (7-7) earned the win pitching a complete game and allowing five hits and striking out eight.
UVa-Wise started hot in game two pushing across its first run of the game on a double to right field off the bat of sophomore Kaylee Jones to score junior Nikki Smith in the top of the first.
The Cavs extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third on a solo shot to left field by Smith, her second of the campaign. Charleston tried to respond in the home half of the frame but would leave two on base to end the inning.
An unearned run followed by a two-RBI triple off the bat of junior Taylor Creasey pushed the Cavs to a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Charleston scored its first run of the game in the home half of the inning to cut the Cavs lead, 5-1.
Two more runs in the fifth for UVa-Wise stretched the lead to six runs as Jones scored before an RBI single off the bat of senior Lucindy Lawson sent home Hockey for the Cavs to take a 7-1 advantage. A fly out and a pair of pop ups to junior pitcher Raychel Lapallo ended the inning as UVa-Wise maintained its lead into the sixth.
Each team scored once more in the seventh inning with the Cavs pushing their run across on an RBI double to right center off the bat of Creasey to score pinch runner Melissa Bartley. Charleston scored its final run of the day on a two-out RBI single to right field before Chambers got the final out of the inning at third base for the Cavs to secure an 8-2 victory.
UVa-Wise posted 11 hits in the second game of the day with Smith leading the way going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and a homer. Creasey had two hits with four RBI while six more Cavaliers each recorded a hit.
Lapallo (5-6) twirled a complete game for UVa-Wise, scattering six hits with one strike out.
The Golden Eagles' Carlee Lucas fell to 4-5 on the season as she allowed five hits across 3 2/3 innings in the circle.
UVa-Wise returns to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against West Virginia State. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Lady Jackets Field.
