WISE - - Cavalier softball earned another Mountain East Conference doubleheader sweep over West Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday afternoon. UVa-Wise posted a 4-2 win in game one before defeating the Bobcats 7-1 in the second game of the day.
Both teams went three up, three down to start the day before West Virginia Wesleyan pulled ahead by two runs in the top of the second inning. A pair of singles with one out put runners on first and second for the Bobcats. Another single scored one with two outs for the Bobcats before a triple down the right field line pushed across one more for a 2-0 lead.
UVa-Wise responded with a run in the bottom of the third. A leadoff single to left field off the bat of junior Julia Hoy put her on first, but the first baseman would be out on the next play as junior Ava Hockey reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second and advancing to third on an error. Junior Taylor Creasey brought home Hockey on an RBI single as the Cavs trailed 2-1.
The Cavs took the lead in the home half of the fifth with back-to-back walks for Hockey and sophomore Alexis Miles putting runners on first and second. A two-out double by junior Nikki Smith plated Hockey with Miles scoring on the next play as sophomore Kaylee Jones knocked an RBI single to center field. Smith scored on the next at-bat to put UVa-Wise ahead 4-2.
Wesleyan recorded three more hits over the next two innings but would leave two stranded in the top of the seventh as UVa-Wise held on for a 4-2 game one victory.
Six Cavaliers registered a hit for UVa-Wise while Smith and freshman pitcher Sydney Collins led the way with two hits apiece.
The Bobcats Hannah Hudson fell to 5-4 with the loss as she scattered eight hits with four strike outs across six innings of work.
Collins (3-1) gained her second win of the weekend in game one as she allowed eight hits with a pair of strike outs in a complete game effort.
UVa-Wise kept the momentum going into the second game of the day pulling ahead to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. A one-out double by Creasey followed by a single to center field off the bat of Smith before advancing to second on the next play put the Cavs in position to score. Bennett's two-RBI single drove home Creasey and Smith as UVa-Wise took the lead.
The Cavs plated one more in the second frame with Hockey drilling a two-out double to center field for the Cavs first hit of the inning. Miles followed with a single, advancing Hockey to third, with Creasey scoring the right fielder on an RBI single for a 3-0 Cavalier advantage.
West Virginia Wesleyan scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth to cut into the Cavs lead. The Bobcats Megan Magsam walked onto first before stealing second and advancing to third on the next play. Another walk put runners in the corners for Wesleyan as Brooke Clark doubled down the left field line to bring across one for the Bobcats as they trailed 3-1.
UVa-Wise responded with a four-run fifth inning to extend the Cavs lead. With Jones on second and sophomore Casey Chambers on first, sophomore pitcher Kailyn Spencer plated Jones on a RBI single. With one out, Hoy earned her fourth hit of the day on a three-run blast to center field to give UVa-Wise a 7-1 advantage. UVa-Wise secured the win in the top of the seventh with a pair of ground outs and a strike out giving the Cavs a 7-1 game two victory.
Eight Cavaliers combined for a season-high 12 hits for UVa-Wise, led by Bennett who had three while Hockey and Creasey each posted two hits.
West Virginia Wesleyan's Haylee Shire (3-7) suffered the loss allowing six hits and three runs in 1 2/3 innings inside the circle.
Spencer improved to 4-4 with the victory as she scattered four hits with seven strike outs across seven innings.
UVa-Wise will being the road portion of their conference schedule this weekend as the team faces West Virginia State for their second doubleheader matchup of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
