Co-Head Coach Karen Bitter Breaks All-Time Win Record, Cavs Earn Doubleheader Sweep over Pioneers

WISE - - Cavalier softball notched its first doubleheader sweep at home this season with a pair of wins over Glenville State College Saturday afternoon. UVa-Wise took game one 6-2 before defeating the Pioneers 9-2 in game two. Emily Hale, who joined the team through Team IMPACT this past fall, threw the ceremonial first pitch to get the day started. With the two wins, Co-Head Coach Karen Bitter tallied her 203rd career victory to break the all-time win record for the program.

UVa-Wise (9-12, 3-3 MEC) recorded its first hit of the game on a two-out single off the bat of junior Nikki Smith, but was left stranded to leave the game scoreless at the end of the first.

The Pioneers (6-14, 1-5 MEC) went three up, three down across the second and third frame with the no change in the score until the bottom of the third inning. With one out, senior Ava Hockey knocked a double to center field with sophomore Alexis Miles sending Hockey home on her fifth home run of the season for a 2-0 UVa-Wise lead.

Glenville tied the game in the top half of the fourth with an RBI single and RBI groundout pushing two runs across for the Pioneers.

The Cavs responded in the home half of the frame with a leadoff double off the bat of sophomore Kaylee Jones to get things started. Senior Shannon Bennett followed with a base hit before freshman pitcher Sydney Collins registered her first hit of the season on an RBI single to center field plating Jones. A stolen base by Collins put runners on second and third as junior Julia Hoy recorded her first hit of the day on a one-out single up the middle to score Bennett and Collins, extending the lead to 5-2 over the Pioneers.

With no change in score over the next few innings, the Cavs tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Taylor Creasey began the inning with a double to left field before scoring on an RBI single by Bennett for a 6-2 UVa-Wise advantage as the Cavs held on to the lead for the game one win.

Eight Cavaliers recorded a hit in the game as Bennett led the way with two hits.

Collins picked up her second win of the season inside the circle, scattering two hits with four strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Glenville's Celina Maberto fell to 3-7 on the season as she allowed six hits with one strike out in 3 1/3 innings inside the circle.

The Pioneers pushed two runs across in the top of the first for a temporary 2-0 lead in game two. An RBI single by the catcher Landry Mays scored the second baseman Catherine Pelfry before a sacrifice fly to left field plated one more for the Pioneers.

UVa-Wise kept up the momentum with a five-run first inning to take a three-run lead over Glenville State. Miles walked onto first as Creasey singled to the right field with both runners advancing on the throw. Smith's second hit of the day sent home Miles and Creasey for a two-RBI single. An error put UVa-Wise in position to score once again as sophomore Casey Chambers drove home two more for the Cavs with an RBI single up the middle. Chambers later scored on a sacrifice hit to put UVa-Wise ahead 5-2.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fourth as UVa-Wise extended their lead. A one-out walk for Miles followed by a hit by pitch for Creasey put two on base for UVa-Wise. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for UVa-Wise before scoring Miles to put UVa-Wise on top 7-2.

The Cavs added on three more runs across the final two innings. An RBI double off the bat of Hockey pushed across pinch runner Katie Russell in the fifth frame. Bennett would get her third hit of the day on a double to left field, advancing to third on the throw. Chambers then scored the left fielder on a single to right field for a 9-2 advantage into the seventh inning.

The Pioneers would not be able to get anything going as the Cavs posted a doubleheader sweep.

UVa-Wise finished with another nine-hit game with Creasey, Chambers, and Hoy each recording a pair of hits for the Cavs.

Glenville's Ally Brown (1-4) suffered the less as she allowed four hits and five runs.

Junior Raychel Lapallo (4-6) earned the win, scattering four hits with a strike out in two innings of work. Sophomore Kaylin Spencer gained her first save of the season allowing just one hit and fanning seven across five innings inside the circle.

UVa-Wise returns to Cavalier Field tomorrow for a doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan College beginning at 1 p.m.
