BRISTOL, Tenn. - - UVa-Wise split its midweek nonconference doubleheader on the road against King University Wednesday afternoon. The Cavs fell in game one 4-3 on a walk-off homerun by the Tornado before rallying for a game two 6-3 victory behind sophomore Alexis Miles' grand slam in the top of the seventh inning.
UVa-Wise (7-12) tried to get things going early as junior Taylor Creasey reached third with her one-out double to left center followed by a ground out to put the Cavs in position to score. The final out on a pop up to the short stop left her stranded heading into the bottom of the frame.
King (15-10) scored its first run of the afternoon in the home half of the first. A leadoff single before a sacrifice bunt placed Casey Gilbert on second before reaching third on a wild pitch. An RBI single to right field would send home Gilbert to give the Tornado a 1-0 advantage.Â
The Cavs drove home their first run in the top of the second to knot the game at 1-1. Back-to-back singles by senior Shannon Bennet and sophomore Casey Chambers put UVa-Wise in scoring position once again. A King throwing error allowed freshman pitcher Sydney Collins to reach first as Bennett scored.
UVa-Wise scored a run in each of the next two innings to take a 3-1 lead over the Tornado. Miles led off the third with a double before advancing to third on a ground out. Sophomore Kaylee Jones' singe to the short stop drove home Miles to take a one-run lead for the Cavs. UVa-Wise pushed one more across in the fourth as junior Julia Hoy knocked a single through the left side. Miles' one-out walk put her on first as pinch runner Katie Russell advanced to second. Another double by Creasey would send home Russell to extend the Cavs lead into the fifth inning.
King knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth with two unearned runs for a 3-3 score into the seventh.
Chambers' single up the middle in the top of the final inning would be all the Cavs could do as King's Kay Brokering secured the win with a walk-off homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 game one victory for King.
UVa-Wise finished with 10 hits as Chambers led the team with three hits while Creasey and Jones each recorded two hits.
King's Gilbert (4-3) earned the win for the Tornado giving up just two hits with three strike outs across three innings.
Collins' fell to (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season scattering nine hits and striking out three in six innings inside the circle.
Creasey recorded her first home run of the campaign with a solo shot to center field to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame in game two.
King answered scoring three runs over the next two innings to go ahead of the Cavs 3-1. Two walks and a stolen base put runners on first and second for the Tornado before a fly out to right center tacked on one more run. In the bottom of the third, King walked in a run before a sacrifice fly plated King's third run.
Junior Nikki Smith's leadoff triple in the top of the fourth inning would be followed by a ground out to drive home the short stop as the Cavs trailed King 3-2.
Scoreless through the next two innings, Miles gave the Cavs the lead in the top of the seventh.
Chambers would reach second base on a dropped fly by the left fielder before Hoy singled to the shortstop to put runners in the corner for the Cavs. An error by the pitcher allowed senior Ava Hockey to reach first and load the bases for UVa-Wise. With two outs and a two-strike count, Miles' belted her second career grand slam, first of the campaign, to left field to push UVa-Wise ahead 6-3 as UVa-Wise held on for a game two victory.
The Cavs finished the second game with six hits as six players each recorded one hit for UVa-Wise.
King's Emma Hughes fell to 4-3 with the loss as she gave up five hits with four strike outs across 6 1/3 innings.
Junior Raychel Lapallo improved to 3-6 with the win as she scattered two hits and struck out three twirling 4 2/3 innings inside the circle.
UVa-Wise returns to Wise for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend with the Cavs facing Glenville State Saturday and West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday. First pitch against the Pioneers is slated for 12 p.m.
