HICKORY, N.C. - - Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 9-5 halftime lead en route to a 16-11 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over UVa-Wise Saturday afternoon. The Bears' Gabby Sousa and Kaley Harris each scored three goals each as 10 Lenoir-Rhyne players in what will be South Atlantic Conference contest next season with the Cavaliers moving to the league.
Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2) scored the opening three goals of the game within 8:45 of first draw only to see UVa-Wise (2-2) respond with three goals to knot the game with 15:24 to play in the first half.
Junior Jesse French scored two of the Cavs' three goals in their scoring spurt as part of her first hat trick of the season. The Woodbridge, Va. native finished with three goals in the contest.
The Bears took control of the game with goals by Kaley Harris, Adriana Williams, Gia Colombo and two goals by Rachel Elmore to go in front 8-3 with 8:47 to play in the half.
From there, the Cavs never recovered as the hosts led by at least two goals for the remainder of the game.
LR won 22-of-29 contested draw controls in the game to overcome the 25 turnovers the team committed.
UVa-Wise outshot the Bears 37-35 but converted just 1-of-10 free position opportunities.
McKayla Grasham scooped up four groundballs while winning four draw controls; Kameryn Darrington added three caused turnovers and three groundballs in the loss.
Next up, Meghan Dennehy's squad will face Tiffin University at home Tuesday. First draw from Smith Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
