WISE - - Tiffin used a strong defensive effort and a fast start to drop UVa-Wise 16-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Smith Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Kat Schneeberger was masterful in goal for the Dragons as her 11 saves thwarted the Cavaliers throughout the game.
Tiffin (3-2) entered the game receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll and jumped out a fast start behind early goals by Ellie Hamilton and Amie Morrison as the duo each scored in the game's opening 90 seconds.
UVa-Wise (2-3) never recovered as the Cavs trailed 5-0 before Caroline Earnshaw scored a woman-up goal on a free position shot with 8:55 to play in the first half.
It would be as close as the hosts would get as Morrison quickly answered the Earnshaw goal with a goal of her own at the 7:25 mark of the first have to give the Dragons a 6-1 lead. It would be the start of a 3-0 run for the Dragons.
Senior Sydney Steinberg stopped the scoring spurt when she scored an unassisted goal with 22 seconds to play in the half to send the game to intermission with Tiffin leading 8-2.
Tiffin continued its strong play to begin the second half with back-to-back goals in the first 3:51 of the half to take a 10-2 lead, forcing UVa-Wise to call a timeout.
The Dragons won 15-of-23 draw controls contested while converting 15-of-20 clear attempts.
Tiffin was able to overcome 21 turnovers behind four goals from Hamilton, three goals from Morrison and three goals from Ashley Osbeck.
Jessica Apgar led the Cavs with two goals, three caused turnovers and two groundballs. Katie Allen scored the other goal for UVa-Wise.
Next up, Meghan Dennehy's squad will visit Belmont Abbey Saturday. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
