Four Cavs Record Five Points in 19-8 Win at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - - Jesse French, McKayla Grasham, Katie Allen and Kristin Gobbi tallied five points each as UVa-Wise turned an early 1-0 deficit into a 19-8 non-conference lacrosse victory over host Tusculum University at Pioneer Field Wednesday. The win was the second in a row over a future South Atlantic Conference foe for the Cavaliers and improves Meghan Dennehy's squad to 2-1 on the young season.

After Tusculum (0-4) took an early 1-0 lead on a woman-up goal by Rachel Holmes, UVa-Wise came alive as the visitors scored the next seven goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

During the spurt, French and Allen netted a pair of goals while Grasham, Ashley Wells and Caroline Earnshaw each found the back of the net once.

The onslaught proved to be too much to overcome for the Pioneers. After back-to-back goals from Brittany Lowery and Juliette Cusano cut the UVa-Wise lead to 7-3, Caroline Earnshaw scored twice in a 26 second span to complete a first half hat trick.

The Cavs poured on the offense in the second half with 10 goals over the final 30 minutes to cruise to the 19-8 victory.

Overall, UVa-Wise outshot Tusculum 42-23 in the contest while winning 20 of 28 contested draw controls. Grasham picked up 13 of the 20 draw controls while Jessica Apgar claimed six groundballs in the triumph.

In goal, Elsa Girardo posted eight saves, including limiting Tusculum to just 3-of-7 on free position chances.

Tusculum was led by Brittany Lowery who scored three goals and Cusano who scored twice.

Grasham's final stat line read three goals, two assists, two groundballs, 13 draw controls and one caused turnover as the senior put together one of the more complete games of her career.

Next up, UVa-Wise will visit Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday; first draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
