SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - - Saturday's Mountain East Conference women's basketball game between UVa-Wise and Notre Dame College featured 10 ties and 20 lead changes in front of a raucous crowd that provided a club like atmosphere at Murphy Gymnasium. It was the host Falcons who took the lead last as Notre Dame claimed a 65-60 win and tied UVa-Wise for fifth place in the league standings with two games to play.
Notre Dame (14-12, 11-9 MEC) received a layup from guard Seina Adachi with 2:19 to play to give the hosts a 57-56 lead. The Falcons would never trail again as Lauren Macer's squad outscored the guests 10-4 down the stretch to complete a season-series sweep.
UVa-Wise (13-13, 11-9 MEC) would eventually find itself down three with under a minute to play on two occasions. However, the Cavs would be unable to get closer as a pair of missed free throws would preclude two missed shots allowing Notre Dame the opportunity to seal the victory at the charity stripe.
Neither team led by more than five points until the final minute of the game while the halftime score read 28-26 in favor of UVa-Wise.
Notre Dame used a 20-point third quarter to take a two point lead to the final 10 minute stanza and used its ability to rebound to fend off Jamie Cluesman's team down the stretch.
Overall, the Falcons won the battle on the glass 51-41 and claimed 21 offensive rebounds. Uncharacteristically, the Cavs lost the battle of the paint as they were outscored 36-28 on the interior.
Adachi led all players with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting while Julie Kemp finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Jessie Stout led all players with 11 boards while adding 10 points in the victory.
UVa-Wise left points at the charity stripe, shooting 14-of-23 for the game, Notre Dame made 13-of-15 attempts.
Ada Stanley came off the bench to score a team-best 17 points while Cynita Webb tallied 14 in a losing cause. Nokomis Williams stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, three blocks, a steal and an assist.
The loss snaps what was a four-game winning streak for UVa-Wise. The Cavs will return to action on Wednesday when the University of Charleston visits the Prior Center for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
